Downstate Goes Red for Women
On National Wear Red Day, we stand united to raise awareness about women’s cardiovascular health and the urgent need for equity in heart care. Heart disease is the leading cause of death for women in the United States, affecting more than 60 million women, nearly 44 percent of adult women, and is responsible for about 1 in every 5 female deaths; yet many still don’t recognize it as their greatest health threat.
This observance, part of American Heart Month, reminds us that heart disease does not discriminate by gender, and that women’s symptoms, risks, and outcomes have been historically underdiagnosed and undertreated.
Here at Downstate, we believe in keeping care close to your heart, through education, prevention, research, and compassionate care. In New York City and Brooklyn, heart disease remains a leading health concern for adults, with cardiovascular conditions contributing significantly to disability and death across our communities.
Through personal experience and professional commitment, our Downstate community continues to advocate for heart health awareness and equitable care for women. By sharing stories, advancing research, and supporting one another as patients, providers, and colleagues, we reaffirm our commitment to protecting heart health—for women, for families, and for all of Brooklyn and beyond.
